Optical windows are used to allow optical radiation to pass from one environment to another without allowing other elements of these environments to mix. And it does not change the wavelength distribution of the beam, the transmitted wave front, nor does it scatter any of the light out of the beam.
Zinc Sulphide (ZnS) windows have an excellent IR transmission range between 8-14 microns.
For visible and mid-wave or long-wave infrared sensors, it has a good transmission range which makes it a good material for thermal imaging.
Multispectral and FLIR are both harder than Zinc Selenide and although the FLIR grade is more hard than multispectral they both can manage harsh environments.
